Torfaen Crossroads

Torfaen Crossroads - Caring for Carers

When you’re looking after someone, who’s looking after you?

If you provide substantial unpaid care for a relative, friend or neighbour who is unable to manage at home without help because of sickness, age or disability, you are a carer.
Carers are people of all ages, including young people, who look after family members or friends . There is no such person as a typical carer. Carers are individuals who may not see themselves as carers.

Crossroads can help by providing trained support staff who work with families to support the carer by giving them time to be themselves – we provide a service of double value, not only providing care for the person with care needs but also respite to the carer.

Young Carers

A young carer supports someone who is ill, disabled, elderly, experiencing mental distress, affected by substance misuse or has a substantial responsibility for caring for a sibling. We have a Young Carers Support Worker who offers support to young carers between the ages of 8 and 18 years, which may include individual support, group activities i.e. outdoor pursuits, music, theatre.

Carers Health

Do your caring responsibilities make it difficult for you to attend appointments with your doctor, dentist, chiropodist or hospital? Crossroads Carers Health Liaison worker is employed to work with carers and health services to enable carers needs to be identified and access to services improved.

We have a range of skills and learning courses and Pamper Days which are free to carers and we may also be able to arrange respite to enable your attendance.

Does this sound like you or someone you know?

If yes, or you are unsure and would like to know more, Torfaen Crossroads may be able to offer help and support or signpost you to someone who can.

We provide practical support that enables you to take a break from caring responsibilities and support is offered regardless of the age or gender of the person you care for, or their illness or disability.
