About Torfaen Womens Aid

Torfaen Women’s Aid is not a solution – it’s a route out of a situation

Torfaen women’s Aid is an organisation that helps women, with or without children, to leave an abusive relationship.

We support women to identify choices and new directions best suited to them. We can’t make things right, we can’t undo all that has been done. However, and most importantly, we can be there for women who want to make changes in their life and support them through that process.

Torfaen Women’s Aid encourages women to make their own decisions and determine their own future. We provide opportunities for women to discuss their individual situation in confidence and to examine the options available in determining their own future.

We support women by acting as an advocate on their behalf and supporting them in whatever choice they decide to make. For example, we offer support in dealing with agencies such as the benefit agency, housing departments, solicitors, schools and so forth.

We also provide that important space for women to talk and be heard about any issue that effects them. By offering discussion groups, individual support, counselling or just a general chat with one of the workers, volunteers or any of the women currently staying in refuge or on our floating support scheme, women benefit from the space to express their feelings, worries and hopes.

Through providing safe, temporary accommodation, floating support and an Information Centre that offers a variety of informal and formal support, information and advice, our service fits the needs of those women and children experiencing domestic abuse. We are aware that every woman’s experience is different.

Women and their children, if any, may need to leave their homes and come into refuge, other women may need support through dropping into our Information Centre on a regular bias, whilst some women may need support to leave the area. The circumstances and situation are never the same, each women is individual to her own needs.

We don’t work for any other agencies, such as the police or social services. We are independent and everything you share with us will be treated in the strictest confidence except in certain circumstances such as your permission has been given or by law we are compelled to share the information.

We do however have close links with other organisations that can help women who have or are experiencing domestic abuse, for example family centre’s, drug and alcohol projects, colleges and self development groups, single parent organisations and counselling organisations. Our network is extensive in supporting women and children.
