An Introduction to Performance Management
Starting with the basic idea that to not only do something well but to ensure next time you do it better then it would make good sense to first plan what you are going to do, secondly do it according to the plan and thirdly review what you have done to inform the next planning stage. What we are talking about here is the basis of a framework for managing performance.
What actually happens in a large organisation such as Torfaen County Borough Council is much more complex but the basic principles remain sound. As you will see in the rest of this site we use terminology such as performance measures, risk assessments, service and improvement plans/corporate plans, the regulatory plan and audit reviews. These are the key components of the Wales Programme for Improvement|, which is the mechanism through which the Welsh Assembly Government ensures continuous improvement in Welsh local governmet. In effect these are the components that we are using to plan and review our services and by doing so continuously improve their quality.
